Take the AI Theory Test
A short test for ages 3–11 about what your child already does. Pick their age, answer 9 or 12 questions, and see which habits are there and which rung of the ladder comes next. It’s free, takes about five minutes and needs no account. If your child passes, you can print a Learner Permit with their first name on it.
Your answers are scored on this page and never sent to us.
The license ladder
It works like learning to drive. You take a test first, practice with an adult beside you, and only then get a little freedom, with rules attached.
For you, today
The Theory Test
A few questions about what your child already does. It shows which habits are there, and which rung comes next.
Usually ages 3–7
The Learner Permit
Your child uses AI only with you beside them. The work is thinking before asking, checking what comes back, and keeping some things their own.
Habits: Think It Through, Check It, Keep It Human
Ages 8–11
The Provisional License
Your child uses some tools without you in the room, inside rules the two of you have written down. The work adds one more habit: deciding what the machine is allowed to do.
Habits: all four, with Decide added
12 and up, comes later
The Full License
For teenagers: permissions, and AI that acts on its own. We haven’t built it yet.
The Theory Test
How old is your child?
Ages 3 to 7 get 9 questions, and 8 to 11 get 12. Their age stays on this page.
Younger than 3 or older than 11? The test is built for ages 3 to 11.
How it’s scored
Each answer is worth points: Usually 2, Sometimes 1, Not yet 0. Each habit has three questions, so it scores from 0 to 6.
- Already there: 5 or 6 points
- On its way: 3 or 4 points
- Start here: 0 to 2 points
Your child passes, and earns the Learner Permit, once Think It Through is on its way. For ages 8 to 11, Check It has to be on its way too. An 8 to 11 year old is ready to start the Provisional License once Think It Through and Check It are both already there. Ages 3 to 7 stay on the Learner Permit whatever the score, because the next rung starts at 8.
We wrote these questions and picked these cutoffs ourselves. Nobody has tested them against how children actually do, so treat the result as a place to start, and trust what you see at home over what the page says.
What happens to your answers
The page adds up your answers in your browser and shows you the result. Your answers, your child’s age and the name on the permit are never sent to us or saved anywhere, and they’re gone when you close the tab. If you leave your email, that’s the only thing that reaches us.
